Why an X “GIF” starts as an MP4 file
The label you see in a post describes the GIF-style viewing experience. The media information available to DownXVideo can identify that animation as animated_gif while exposing its supported source variants as video/mp4.
Downloading that source preserves the .mp4 format X makes available. Converting creates a new GIF from the MP4 frames; it does not reveal or restore the exact bytes of a GIF that may have been uploaded before X processed the media.

Renaming animation.mp4 to animation.gif changes only the filename, not the encoded media. The renamed file can fail to open or upload because apps inspect its actual format.
The Convert to GIF action performs actual browser-side encoding and gives the new file a .gif extension. Use Download source MP4 when conversion is unnecessary.
Browser conversion limits and privacy
The MP4-to-GIF conversion runs locally in your browser after DownXVideo has parsed the public post. The media is not sent to a separate conversion service, and DownXVideo does not store the generated GIF.
To keep the browser responsive, conversion is limited to an MP4 of at most 20 MiB and 15 seconds. The GIF output uses a maximum 640-pixel longest edge at 10 frames per second and is also stopped if its output-size protection is reached. Progress and cancellation remain available while the conversion is running.
A low-memory phone, unsupported decoder, closed tab, or unusually complex animation can still interrupt the work. In that case, download the source MP4 instead; conversion failure does not make the public source file invalid.
Looping, audio, and converted quality
X can present the source MP4 as a silent loop in its own interface. Another video player decides whether the MP4 loops or shows playback controls, while a compatible GIF viewer normally follows the loop stored in the converted GIF.
GIF does not carry an audio track. DownXVideo does not add, repair, separate, or extract audio during conversion. It also does not invent missing frames or restore colors that are not available in the MP4 source.
If the post contains several media items

- Confirm that you copied the complete public post URL, not a direct image, profile, or search link.
- Open the source post and confirm that the animation is still public and is identified as GIF-style media rather than an ordinary video.
- Do not provide a password, cookie, token, or private URL; DownXVideo does not use them.
- If the tool reports temporary rate limiting or a source error, wait and retry the original post later.
- If conversion is unavailable or exceeds a browser limit, keep the source MP4 instead of renaming it to
.gif.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a Twitter/X GIF have an MP4 source?
X can present a silent looping animation as a GIF while exposing its supported media source as MP4. DownXVideo identifies the animated_gif item and keeps that source format available.
Is the converted download a real .gif file?
Yes. The browser encodes a new GIF from the MP4 frames. It is not an MP4 with a renamed extension.
Is it the exact GIF originally uploaded to X?
No. The original uploaded bytes are not available through this download path. The .gif result is newly encoded from the MP4 that X exposes for the public post.
Why can the GIF be larger or look different from the MP4?
GIF uses a limited color palette and less efficient animation compression than MP4. A converted GIF can therefore be larger and may show less color detail even though it follows the same visible frames.
Does GIF conversion upload the animation to another conversion service?
No. The submitted public post URL is still processed by the DownXVideo parser, but the MP4-to-GIF format conversion itself runs in your browser.
Can it download a GIF from a private or deleted post?
